Abstract

The article takes the case of four settlements in the Lbishchenskii district of the Ural region to examine the social and economic conditions of the region’s nomadic population in the early 20th century. The study is drawn on the data from the 1912 cadastral document “Materials on the Kirghiz Land Tenure, Gathered and Expounded by the Statistical Party of the Torgay-Ural Resettlement Region”. The article discusses a variety of issues from the numbers of the cattle owned to the supplementary income sources, such as agriculture, peonage, trades and crafts, that were necessary for the nomads to ensure adequate food supply.
