If at the beginning of the civil war Philippus maintained neutrality and despite that reached the top of cursus honorum, i.e. censorship, during the final stage of the fight between Mariani and Sullani he abandoned his moderate tactics and took a decisive step defecting to Sulla’s side. The author argues that it was due not only to Philippus’ willingness to support the strongest side but also to obtain the pardon of the eventual winner, Sulla, who must have been removed from the list of senators by Philippus when the latter was censor in 86 or 85 BC. Philippus achieved his aim and managed to keep his political influence. The last pinnacle of Philippus’ political career in 78–77 BC could hardly have been possible without it.
