Abstract
The possibilities and limitations of the linear trend decomposition method [Firebaugh, 1989; 1992] in cohort analysis when studying changes in society are considered, and it is indicated that its application is effective for understanding the nature of social changes in a comparative perspective. The advantage of using objective statistical criteria in distinguishing the effects of the historical period and cohort change in conditions when the studied trait does not change significantly with age is justified.
