- Abstract
- Success of modernization gave backward and feudal Japan a chance to convert into contemporary state and to demand its share in colonial territories. At the period between signing the American-Japanese Trade Agreement in 1858 and Japanese victory in the war with China in 1895 the main goal of the Japanese policy toward the USA was revision of unequal treaties signed in 1850-1860s.
