Abstract
This paper surveys the factors of spatial location in the U.S. defense industry through the periods of its history in the 20th and 21st centuries. Quantitative analysis based on enterprise-level data from the U.S. Bureau of the Census demonstrates a marked decrease of geographical concentration in one of the major sub-industries (production of search and navigation. instruments for military and aerospace use) from 1994 to 2010. The study finds that the reason for this tendency was the shutdown of number of large facilities throughout the period and the transfer of production capacity in dual-use segments to East Asia.
