Abstract
The U.S. capital city of Washington is littered with memorials and monuments, including those devoted to the Civil war of 1861-1865, the 150th anniversary of which is celebrated in most States. In connection with the anniversary necessary restoration works were held. Monuments and memorials of Washington, D.C., devoted to the Civil war, are the most important part of the country’s cultural-historical heritage and serve for the preservation of national historical memory. They are an organic part of the architectural appearance of the capital and testify to the dominance of realistic trends in American sculpture. To create memorials and monuments, the most famous architects and sculptors of the United States were recruited on a competitive basis.
